Indigenous activist and prominent Voice to Parliament No campaigner Nyunggai Warren Mundine has pulled out of the race to fill Marise Payne’s senate seat.
The NSW Liberal Party is set to select a replacement for Senator Payne, after the former foreign minister announced her retirement from politics earlier this month.
In an appearance on ABC Insiders on Sunday, the prominent No campaigner revealed his support for changing the date of Australia Day as well as treaties with local indigenous groups – both issues out of step with the No campaign and the Liberal Party. “Aboriginal culture is our First Nations and the first thing we learn about life is that one nation cannot talk about another nation’s country,” he said.
“These things have huge commercial outcomes for Aboriginal people in regards to jobs, in regards to training, in regards to running their own business and it’s done a tremendous job for Aboriginal communities,” he said.
