The recent increase in the minimum wage was the start of an important shift in wage-setting, writes Gareth Hutchens.

But that was despite the Public Service Board telling policymakers that the prohibition against married women should be included in the new legislation.

According to Mr Rowse, married women were still retained as "temporary" or "casual" staff members, so they were still denied the pension benefits available to permanent members and removed from the normal promotional stream. Are they paid according to their productive potential? Or is their productive potential hamstrung by cultural norms and laws?Those are the types of questions we're dealing with here, with the Fair Work Commission's recent minimum wage ruling.

It means the commission now has to consider whether the existing minimum wage and award minimum wage rates constitute a properly valued and non-gender biased foundation upon which to make any wage adjustments.
