The Fort Worth Zoo is celebrating the arrival of 17 lesser flamingo chicks — with more on the way.
The flamingos, which are difficult to breed, hatched at the facility over the last month, the zoo told Storyful.Zoo officials announced the new chicks on Monday in a Facebook post that said, “These fuzzy valentines have us seeing pink.”
While the species is typically difficult to breed under human care, the zoo said it has hatched 382 chicks to date. Zookeepers are expecting more hatchlings. “The Fort Worth Zoo boasts the most successful lesser flamingo breeding program in the world,” the post stated. They will start to turn pink by three or four years old, the zoo added. Zookeepers will help care for the animals until they can be viewed by the general public.
According to NBC DFW, lesser flamingos are listed as near threatened by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Their population has been rapidly decreasing due to habitat degradation and disturbance.
