Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) said there is only one thing certain regarding an indictment of former President Donald Trump — the judicial system is “perceived to be political” and therefore undermined.
“America’s institutions should not be perceived to be political,” Kennedy told Fox and Friends. “Those who look at the larger issue, allowing American institutions to appear to be politicized, whether they are or not, undermines our judicial system, which is one of the reasons America became the most extraordinary country in all of human history. It is why so many others want to come here and so many business people want to invest here.
“[Bragg] is more of an activist than an impartial prosecutor. He believes cops are bigger problem than criminals who refused to prosecute many crimes,” Kennedy said. “He can do a lot of damage here to a very important institution if he’s not careful. I would say the same thing if President Trump were a Democrat or if the shoe were on the other foot.”
Kennedy’s comments come as several reports suggest Bragg is preparing to indict Trump on charges related to the investigation into alleged hush money payments made to porn star Stormy Daniels in 2016.The Louisiana Republican declined to comment on how a possible indictment might affect the 2024 election, reiterating previous predictions that results will prove “the experts will be wrong.”
In response to Trump’s calls for people to protest in light of his possible indictment, Kennedy said, “You are free to protest. You are not really free if you can express yourself, but do it peacefully. Don’t be a knucklehead and riot.”
