WATCH: Jared Polis is about to swear in for his second term as Colorado governor.
Polis stewarded the state through the most acute phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the social and economic turmoil that resulted from it. For his second term, he made lowering Colorado’s crime rate a top priority. He already requested stiffer penalties for car thefts, an effort legislators are likewise pursuing. Polis also celebrated recent voter-approved cuts to the state income tax. He also hopes to further trim it and make recent property tax cuts permanent.
Voters decisively re-elected the Democrat in November after a first term in which he helped usher in free full-day kindergarten and caps on insulin costs. The Democrat-controlled state government also launched initiatives aimed at lowering costs on the individual health insurance market and free preschool for part of the week for Colorado’s 4-year-olds.
Before serving as governor, Polis launched several tech companies, served on the state board of education, and as a congressman representing Northern Colorado. While Tuesday will include the swearing-in ceremony, remarks and a concert in the evening, he will deliver his State of the State address to the legislature on Tuesday.
