A mother has become the sixth victim to lose their life after a man went on a stabbing rampage inside a busy shopping centre in Sydney's eastern suburbs, before being shot dead by a cop.

Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke said just after 6pm five people were killed in the attack and several others were in a critical condition, including a baby. A police inspector who was nearby the shopping centre rushed to the complex as the attack unfolded, and was directed towards the man by horrified onlookers.
The man - who is believed to have acted alone - first entered the centre about 3.10pm, left briefly and then returned about 3.20pm, police said. "Tonight, the first thoughts of all Australians are with the victims of these terrible acts and their loved ones. Our nation offers our deepest condolences and sympathies to all those who are grieving for someone they have lost and we send our strength to those who have been injured."
