Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has revealed the referendum for an Indigenous Voice to Parliament will be held on October 14.
A six-week official Yes23 campaign will be launched following Wednesday's announcement at a rally in South Australia.
Several Yes camp leaders are in attendance at the Adelaide rally, including shadow indigenous affairs minister Malarndirri McCarthy, while No camp figureheads Warren Mundine and Jacinta Price will travel to the South Australian capital on Thursday. The Voice to Parliament proposes the recognition of Australia’s Indigenous peoples in the nation’s constitution and an enshrinement of an advisory body that would consult with parliament on issues surrounding their communities.
The question to be put to the public on referendum voting day will be: “A proposed law: to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice.”
