Footage has captured the moment controlled explosives have demolished the part of the wreckage of a bridge in the United States which collapsed after it was struck by container ship earlier this year.

Footage has captured the moment controlled explosives have demolished part of the remaining wreckage of a collapsed bridge in the US city of Baltimore, in a bid to help free the vessel that struck the structure seven weeks ago.

Planned charges were detonated at the site on Monday about 5pm, local time, in a bid to help free the trapped vessel from part of the bridge that was still leaning on the ship. The official Port of Baltimore Facebook page shared further imagery of the controlled blast, thanking the US Army Corps of Engineers and US Coast Guard for their help.

"The small charges, a standard controlled demolition tool, will split the large section of truss resting on the M/V DALI at specific locations to create multiple smaller sections, which allows salvors to use cranes and barges already on scene to clear wreckage and remove the vessel from the channel," the USACE wrote on X.

The plan is now to refloat the container ship in the coming days and reopen Baltimore port's channel by the end of May.
