At an average of $420,000 worth of fines issued per day, Queensland’s new mobile phone and seatbelt cameras are packing a road-safety punch.

New mobile phone and seatbelt cameras at secret locations across Queensland have already netted more than $100 million in fines for the state government in the program’s first eight months of operation.

At $1033 per mobile phone offence and $413 for not wearing a seatbelt, this equates to about $101 million in total fines issued, or an average of $420,000 every day. A TMR spokesman said more cameras would be rolled out across Queensland, and “every dollar” from the high-tech program, developed by Australian company Acusensus, was invested back into road safety initiatives.

“There is evidence supporting the effectiveness of penalties to bring about desired behaviour change,” he said. “International research consistently shows the likely effects from increased penalties is estimated to decrease fatal crashes by 4 to 12 per cent.”
