A new report assessing human rights across the globe lists 'serious human rights issues' within Australia, including COVID restrictions, mistreatment of asylum seekers and disproportionate incarceration of Indigenous people.
A new report assessing human rights concerns across the globe has listed Australia's response to the COVID-19 pandemic along with its treatment of asylum seekers and Indigenous rights as the country's most serious issues. It argued that the country's border restrictions in response to the pandemic were disproportionate
HRW Australia researcher Sophie McNeill said the government's failure to address these issues "tarnishes Australia's global standing and mars the country’s human rights record". Ms McNeill said that while governments had the right to restrict borders during a health emergency, this should be "proportionate".
