The public is being asked by the Scottish Government for its view on 'alkaline hydrolysis' - an eco-friendly alternative to traditional burial and cremation.
Plans to allow Scots the option of an eco-friendly “water cremation” when they die have taken a step forward.
Typically, water cremation involves putting a body in a biodegradable pouch then into a container of pressurised water and a small amount of potassium hydroxide. A change would mark the first alternative to traditional burial and cremation for the deceased in more than a century. "However, it is something everyone is likely to experience at some stage in their life, whether it's the death of a family member, a loved one, or a friend.
"This is why we need to ensure we get the right policy and legal frameworks in place and I urge anyone with views on the issues in these consultations to take the time to respond."
