Ten people will lose their jobs at Coleraine facility
A watersports centre on the River Bann is closing down with its owner blaming ongoing pollution and blue-green algae outbreaks.
“We could just struggle on and pour our own money in, but I’ve absolutely no faith the exact same thing is going to happen again next year and we’ll just sink further into a hole. Our rates are up 50% and staff costs, insurance costs, are also away up. It’s just not sustainable.” Rob says the issue has been “building up for years, but got particularly bad last year” and worse this year. He added: “It’s been the same situation for years with no investment in water and sewage infrastructure that has lead us here. No one wants to take responsibility and it’s only going to get worse unless some radical action is taken to address hundreds of thousands of tons of discharge being poured into the lough.
In july Thames Water was fined £3.3m after it discharged millions of litres of undiluted sewage into two rivers, killing more than 1,400 fish. In November last year, Northern Ireland Water Limited was fined £3,000 after pleading guilty to making a discharge of sewage effluent into Dundrum Inner Bay. In a post on the centre’s Facebook page, Rob accused the Northern Ireland Environment Agency of being “complacent and ineffectual in holding them [NI Water] to account”. He added that the centre is now planning on selling off all their equipment.
