Waves wash over roads, lap at houses as wild weather hits NSW coast | sallyrawsthorne HatAlexander
The sea devoured the beaches and the wind brought down trees and their branches on Saturday as the low-pressure system that brought flooding to the North Coast earlier in the week moved south.
A surfer whose board snapped in half at Bronte was channelled all the way to Tamarama before he could climb out of the ocean. In the north of the city, a large tree fell across the road in Kuringai and the NSW State Emergency went onto high alert as fears rose of powerlines and trees falling due to the saturation of the soil from recent rainfall.
The Bureau of Meteorology issued gale warnings for coastal areas of Sydney, the Macquarie, Hunter, Illawarra, Batemans Bay and Eden. Winds of 60km/h were predicted from Kurnell near the airport to Narooma on the South Coast, and heavy surf warnings for more than 500 kilometres of coastline from Newcastle to Eden.
“We do not want to leave people without accommodation and our focus will always be on trying to accommodate people as close to their communities as possible.”
