The Greens have labelled a 12-month exemption to resume exports for recycling a backflip and a failure to bolster Australia’s own recycling infrastructure.
Exports of sorted household plastics were halted mid-last year under a staged ban; however, Oatley Resources Australia has granted the 12-month exemption which will see nearly 20 thousand tonnes of waste shipped overseas.
“It’s very frustrating … waving the white flag, we’ve had seven years now where we’ve had time to plan to do our own recycling,” said Greens Senator Peter Whish-Wilson.
