Wayne Peter Hunt has died while serving time in an NT prison over the driving death of an 11-year-old boy.
Wayne Peter Hunt pleaded guilty in January to a single charge of dangerous driving causing death, after accidentally accelerating and pinning the child against a wall for eight seconds at the Moulden Supermarket in Palmerston, nearly two years ago.But last week, the NT's director of public prosecutions successfully appealed the sentence, arguing it was "manifestly inadequate" and the Court of Appeal ordered Hunt spend a further nine months in prison rather than home detention.
On the day of his sentencing earlier in the year, the court heard that Hunt dropped an iced coffee he'd purchased from the store, and while trying to retrieve the drink from underneath his car, he applied his foot to the accelerator instead of the brake – lurching forward and pinning the child to the wall in front.
The judge said the boy had suffered "immediate catastrophic crush injuries", but that it was clear Hunt "did not intend for the vehicle to move forward in the way that it did".
