Planning experts say that Sydney's love affair with the car needs to be re-assessed if we're to reduce urban congestion rates | TheMattBungard
Sydney's love affair with the car needs to be dismantled if the city is to reduce its crippling congestion, planning experts say.
Mr Vivian's firm, Bates Smart, was one of three invited by the Urban Taskforce - which represents property developers - to create a vision for Sydney in 2050.He said that in the past decade, major Australian cities had woken up to the fact they had fallen behind on infrastructure - particularly cycling.
"They seemed to have forgotten that roads are public spaces, not the exclusive right of cars," she said. That meant "zoning ends up dictating what you can and can't do", Dr Geha said. "Even if you have a great idea on how to do something, you can't do it. Having said that, we have gotten much better at using space."
"He tapped his credit card on this thing, it unlocked two scooters, he gave me a helmet. That works reasonably well, but the roads were not very busy. That might be impossible to do safely [in Sydney]."
