The leader of the Branch Davidians was David Koresh. A stand-off with his religious cult lasted for 51 days, ending on April 19, 1993, when the FBI launched an assault that left 80 cult members dead.
On April 19, 1993, the FBI launched a tear-gas assault on the Mount Carmel Center, a religious cult near Waco, Texas, where self-proclaimed prophet David Koresh and the Brand Davidians had been involved in a standoff for 51 days.
On the final day, when Mount Carmel burned to the ground, 76 cult members, including 25 children and Koresh, died. In the end, the deaths totaled four federal agents and 82 Branch Davidians. The Branch Davidians were an offshoot of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. They believed in a literal interpretation of the Bible. On March 9, 1993, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that Koresh was “baiting law enforcement negotiators.
Ricks said that Koresh had told federal negotiators things such as: “We are ready for war,” “Let’s get it on,” “Your talk is becoming in vain,” and, “I’m going to give you an opportunity to save yourself before you get blown away.” After the refusal to surrender, the FBI used tanks to fire tear-gas canisters through windows of buildings in the compound. The Branch Davidians continued to refuse to surrender. Around noon on April 19, a fire erupted in the compound. Cult members ran from the blaze that destroyed the compound. Some of the dead had been killed by the fire while others had been fatally shot. It was not clear if the gunshot wounds were self-inflicted.
