Major party leaders have committed themselves to changing parliament’s workplace culture.
Scott Morrison has formally apologised to the victims of bullying, harassment and assaults sustained in parliamentary workplaces, including former staffer Brittany Higgins, whose alleged rape sparked a searing report exposing politics’ “boys club” mentality.” to the victims issued in the House of Representatives, Mr Morrison, Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce and Labor leader Anthony Albanese committed themselves to overhauling the culture and making the workplace safe.
“A power imbalance over that time that has been exploited. And that exploitation, abuse and harassment has played itself out through terrible traumatic and harrowing experiences.where bullying, abuse, harassment and in some cases even violence became normalised. This has to change, it is changing, and I believe it will change.
The report called for a “statement of acknowledgement” by Parliament’s presiding officers as its first recommendation, saying it should publicly acknowledge the presence of misconduct, the harm caused to individuals and past inaction.Speaker of the House of Representatives Andrew Wallace said Parliament should be a “model workplace” for the nation but for too many people it had neither been safe nor respectful.
“No-one deserves to feel unsafe or disrespected any workplace, let alone our national parliament,” he said.
