Lizzie Jarrett, a Dunghutti, Gumbaynggirr and Bundjalung woman, said Indigenous people had already been the subject of a referendum in 1967, and it did “f--- all for our rights”. She urged those present to vote “no” in any future referendum to establish the Voice. Speaking in Melbourne, Greens Senator Lidia Thorpe echoed the criticism and said Aboriginal people “deserve better” than the proposed Voice.The Sydney rally was preceded by a smoking ceremony in Belmore Park.“We have an opportunity to have a treaty … that could put 10 independent Blak seats in the parliament today. We want real power and we won’t settle for anything less.”
“This is an opportunity for Australia. It’s one that I sincerely hope that Australia doesn’t miss. This is a gracious and generous offer to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as our first peoples.”
