The lockdown in Tennant Creek is expected to be extended after nine cases of COVID-19 were recorded in the Northern Territory in the past 24 hours, Health Minister Natasha Fyles says."Our teams are working around the clock to make sure we have testing, we're delivering vaccines and making sure the community is kept safe."
Seven of the new cases were recorded in Tennant Creek, a remote town nearly 1,000 kilometres south of Darwin, including a woman in her 60's who is "quite unwell" who lives in the Wuppa Town Camp. A female and male in their 40's have been transferred to the Alice Springs Hospital, and another pair in their 20's is receiving care at the Tennant Creek Hospital. At a Sunday press conference, Ms Fyles said every resident from the town camp, on the outskirts of Tennant Creek, has now been tested and health authorities are currently working through the logistics of ensuring people are being cared for in hospital if needed.
Tennant Creek was due to exit strict stay-at-home orders on Monday at 5pm after the major service hub, home to around 3,000 people, was plunged into a lockdown on Friday.
