Fake AI images and videos flooding social media thanks to Elon Musk’s xAI firm. Microsoft and Amazon say we may need new laws to stamp out the worst ones.
Already a subscriber?Amazon and Microsoft say they cannot control AI-generated deepfake images and the only way they can be reined in is if governments regulate them.
Microsoft and Amazon signalled they would support new laws to police deepfakes that risk distorting democratic processes and harming businesses. Google, meanwhile, urged caution, saying its technology has prevented any harm to elections from deepfake technology so far. In May, Australian Electoral Commissioner Tom Rogers told a Senate committee the AEC did not have the legislative tools or technical capability to deter, detect or adequately deal with false AI-generated content concerning the next election.
Google’s Australian public policy head, Lucinda Longcroft, told the committee her company had been heavily involved in helping stop deepfakes in the Korean elections, but urged caution with legislation. She said tech companies and the AEC had successfully enforced their own AI guardrails during the Voice referendum, and seen little impact from AI deepfakes.
Ms Foster admitted current protections against deepfake content have limited effects, and said governments should enact stronger laws to punish individuals who create misleading images and videos. “We’re making progress against that with initiatives like watermarking, but it is admittedly incomplete.”
