Foxtel content boss Amanda Laing confirmed the pay TV and streaming company had bought a catalogue of programs and films from the entertainment giant.
Securing exclusive shows is critical for local subscription streaming and advertising-backed services as the market fragments and international production companies - such as Disney and Paramount - take back content for their own services. Foxtel chief executive Patrick Delany said in Septemberwhich could mean Foxtel loses some of its most popular drama when its current content deal expires in December 2023.
Laing signalled Foxtel can still do content deals even if NBCUniversal and WarnerMedia launched services locally. “We can’t dictate what our partners want to do across around the globe,” Laing said. “It’s not like the old days when if you’re not with us, you’re against us. It’s actually what can we do together? Because it’s a tough market. It’s fiercely competitive. So finding allies... is the best way to get the best outcome.
The loss of Sky Studios and Peacock content is a blow to Stan’s content slate and has forced the company to turn to alternative ways to control content supply. Nine bossabout commissioning individual shows and the possibility of a partial sale of the business. This is the second major deal for Foxtel, which owns Binge and Kayo Sports. Foxtel and Seven announced in September they, which commences in 2025. It was the largest sports broadcasting deal in Australia history, raising concerns other codes would expect large sums of money in future deals. Laing said media companies needed to be smart about how they invested.
“I don’t think competition will be reduced, I think it will continue to be tough. You’re just going to need to have strong partnerships and be clever about where you invest what you invest in - between exclusivity and non-exclusivity and between local productions and international acquisitions. When you do that right, you get the rewards through customer acquisition and engagement.”
