Holly Davies sat in a 15-kilometre traffic jam while a bushfire burned towards her and her children. Four years later another bushfire season has been declared, and her exit route is yet to be upgraded.
With southern access points closed due to fires, Picton was the only route residents of the southern Wollondilly villages could access for evacuation.
"A strategic business case is being developed following a period of community feedback in 2021 and 2022," the spokesperson said. "I do not want the communities of any of the villages in Wollondilly to be the next Maui village," she said. Wollondilly Mayor Matt Gould said the only reason hundreds of people didn't perish in Wollondilly in 2019 was because the fire changed direction.
