Germany has delivered a rebuke to the US after President Donald Trump signed a bill barring firms from working on a pipeline that will deliver Russian gas to Europe. The US believes the pipeline will make Europe too dependent on RussiaThe Nord Stream 2 project is currently under construction on the Baltic Sea floor and will span a distance of 1,200 kilometres. On Friday, Mr Trump ratified US legislation that imposed sanctions on firms laying pipes for the project.
@realdonaldtrump twitter - What good is NATO if Germany is paying Russia billions of dollars for gas and energy? Why are there only 5 out of 29 countries that have met their commitment? The U.S. is paying for Europe’s protection, then loses billions on Trade. Must pay 2% of GDP IMMEDIATELY, not by 2025.
In response, Germany's finance minister and vice-chancellor Olaf Scholz told German broadcaster ARD that Berlin"firmly rejected" Washington's decision. "Such sanctions are a serious interference in the internal affairs of Germany and Europe and their sovereignty. We firmly reject this," Mr Scholz said.
"It is clear to us that we will not accept the imposition of such a sanction, and we will make this clear to the American Government."This was echoed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who told MPs on Wednesday that Germany must show the US that"we do not approve of this practice".
