Even the most compliant and trusting among us have reached our limits for mandates and restrictions. |OPINION by Jon Faine
The COVID pandemic has entered a new phase. For the first time political science prevails over medical science. A year ago, that would have been wrong. Now it seems appropriate and timely. And not just because we are approaching a state election campaign.
Those chaotic scenes must not reoccur. The sole legacy of those distressing times ought to be court appearances for those belatedly being held accountable for their outbursts. We became one of the most protected communities on the globe. We still are. We shut our borders, external and internal. We were locked down. We were lucky enough, well-informed enough – and rich enough – to become highly vaccinated.Yet despite those advantages both natural and acquired, our struggles with COVID have been disruptive and for some catastrophic – but nowhere near as tragic as for many other nations.
We now must live with the pandemic. That does not retrospectively validate the views of those who vainly argued the same thing two years ago. At that time, they were wrong – it was inappropriate for that phase of the emergency. But it is right for this stage of the crisis.Illustration: Matt Davidson Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is re-convening national cabinet to address the pressures being felt across the countryIn Victoria, the calculation has been made within the inner sanctum of the state government, that this winter surge will soon be behind us and a dim memory by the time our state election campaign proper kicks off after the football finals in September.
