Whether it's Russia's war with the West or the China-US crisis in Taiwan, there is a growing acceptance of the fact a major war is the new reality and that a nuclear war is the next possibility.
Perhaps, the war in and over Ukraine will become one of those watershed moments in contemporary history - remembered down the track from the viewpoint of what happened “before it” and “after it”.Do we reflect on environmental concerns, the COVID pandemic or terrorism in the context of the ongoing hostilities on the battlefields of Ukraine?Climate change, global warming and the human impact on modern and future life are some of the biggest issues of our times.
The reality is this is the first war waged on the territory of a country, which housed 15 nuclear reactors in four locations prior to the outbreak of hostilities, with no clearly defined rules of engagement. Europe’s punitive sanctions against Vladimir Putin’s regime, and Russia’s subsequent countermoves, have created a massive problem for the environmentally conscious continent.
Yet, when the outbreak of the war triggered a mass exodus of refugees to Europe all restrictions in Ukraine concerning mass gatherings, cross border movements, vaccinations etc were quietly scrapped in the face of a more traumatic human drama. I have little doubt that should the successful assassination of Al Qaeda’s chief Ayman al-Zawahiri, who was killed in a surgical drone strike on July 31, take place same time last year, the international reaction to this important and symbolic development would have been different.Globalisation of the War and Weaponisation of the Mind
That ran alongside open confrontation short of direct military conflict between Beijing, Washington and Taipei over Taiwan’s future status. There is growing acceptance of the fact that a major war is the new reality, and a nuclear war is the next possibility.
