Former Labor minister Graham Richardson says Foreign Minister Penny Wong’s meeting with her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi at the G20 summit was a “good sign”.
“And when you think about the size of the contribution China makes to Australia’s economy by way of receiving our exports, wow … we need to talk to them.”
Mr Richardson said if China really wanted to hurt Australia, they could “do our economy and our farmers, in particular, massive damage”. “We have to be smart about this, we have to hold onto our principles, but we have to make sure we’re being very, very careful about it.”
