Australia could become the first country in the world to see disposable vapes completely banned in a government crackdown to protect the health of young people.
Australia is set to see some of the toughest laws on vapes, with the sale, importation and manufacture of e-cigarettes to be banned in a bid to stop big tobacco from recruiting"a new generation to nicotine addiction".
The only accessible means of a vape is a prescription from a doctor or nurse for patients who struggle with nicotine addiction and those wanting to quit smoking. "We’ve got to remember when these products were first brought to Australia and other countries in the world, they were presented as a therapeutic good that would help hardened smokers kick the habit," he said to First Edition host Peter Stefanovic.
According to the Australian Institute of Health and Wellbeing, one in two people aged between 18 and 24 have vaped at least once in their lifetime, with young females taking up the habit increasing from 2.4 per cent in 2019 to 20 per cent in 2022-2023. Stefanovic argued the banning of vapes will drive the black market further and that young people will find other means to buy the devices if it becomes illegal.
