Many residents say it's impossible to get through. In some cases, they're right.

The Motor Vehicle Commission has long been a target of critics who say the agency should do better with customer service. That continued through the pandemic, when in-person appointments were unavailable and drivers said they felt stuck. Those complaints have been addressed, MVC told NJ Advance Media in December, with more than 2,500 appointments offered each business day and with more added to the MVC website every morning at 7 a.m.

“Callbacks are handled in the order in which they are received,” he said. “Callbacks not completed during the current business day remain in the queue until answered, starting as the priority of the next business day.” MVC call service representatives are available Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., at 292-6500.The state says up to 2 million homeowners and renters should get an average rebate of $971, with payments to be made in the late spring.Application mailers and emails went out in the early fall, but those who didn’t receive one turned to the hotline for help. Others called with questions about eligibility and special filing statuses.

Since Jan. 3, the hotline has received 122,414 calls. Caliendo said. Of those, 79,705 received a message saying to call back, which she described as a “courtesy response message.” Representatives answered 38,399 calls, she said. The discrepancy in numbers is because some people hang up, she said.
