Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has exchanged wisecracks with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon after the Kiwi leader questioned Australians’ language skills.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has suggested the Kiwi accent needs its own translator after his New Zealand counterpart said speaking to Australians required “simple English ”.

Mr Albanese hit back at the remark on Thursday and questioned whether speaking with a Kiwi accent could even be considered English. “We’re great mates. Sometimes though, we do speak a different language – and that’s when we both think we are speaking English.” “In my dealings with Australians it always pays to be incredibly simple and clear and use English,” Mr Luxon said.
