Education Minister Jason Clare says it comes down to how we get more young people to “want to be a teacher” as there has been a “16 per cent drop in young people” pursuing a teaching degree.
The education ministers will propose several reforms such as bonuses, increased wages and incentives to encourage students to study teaching at university.
Mr Clare said about “70 per cent of young people” who start a degree finish and only “50 per cent of young people” who start a teaching degree finish it. “If we could get that 50 to 60 then already you would go a long way to address part of the supply shortage of teachers,” Mr Clare told Sky News Australia.
