Newsom must run for re-election in a normal, head-to-head matchup against another candidate in 2022.
On Sunday, former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer — who received the third-most votes among replacement candidates behind Elder and Democratic YouTuber Kevin Paffrath — appeared onand said he is"absolutely seriously considering" running in 2022.
In that interview, Faulconer, who has styled himself as a moderate Republican, said that the recall turned into a"circus" thanks to some of the rhetoric and positions taken by candidates like Elder, businessman John Cox and reality TV star Caitlyn Jenner. He sounded so much like a candidate that host Nikki Laurenzo commented,"It sounds like you're running," and asked the mayor when a formal announcement might come.
