But conversations are finally shifting, helped by various attempts to develop male contraceptive options. While there have been reports of RISUG being made available within a year, more conservative estimates suggest we’ll probably be waiting a bit longer. “I think realistically we’re still three to five years away [from it being available to patients],” says Dr Amanda Wilson, a public health psychologist at De Montford University.

Either way, we’re closer than ever before to male contraceptives becoming a reality. But will men actually get on board? Dr Wilson’s research, which has examined the social acceptability of male contraceptives, reveals attitudes are mixed.
