Keeping their son’s memory alive with and beyond The Laramie Project has become a life’s work for Dennis and Judy Shepard.
Matthew Shepard was just 22 when he was beaten and left to die near Laramie, Wyoming, in October 1998. Matthew was an out gay man targeted because of his sexual orientation.
The company conducted extensive interviews with the Laramie townspeople to shape the story of a community reeling from such a violent event and struggling to define themselves in relation to it. The result was, a verbatim stage play that paints a vivid picture of bigotry, discrimination and community: a social barometer of how ideas invade, grow, change and complicate within a social setting.
Produced by the American Australian Association and Tectonic Theatre Project, the reading features a starry local cast including Tony Sheldon .
