The Prime Minister has called on Australians to turn their focus on hospitalisations and illnesses rather than infection numbers as the country reported more than 4,000 new coronavirus cases on Saturday.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the focus remains on hospitalisations and illnesses rather than the surge in COVID-19 case numbers as he reminded the country it's time to"live with the virus".

South Australia recorded 73 new local cases, Queensland recorded 31 cases, the ACT recorded 18 cases and Tasmania reported four. "We're going to alarm people on case numbers. What matters is hospitalisations, ICU, people on ventilators and severe illness. "We're past the time when we just talked about case numbers, that is not a trigger for any decisions; it is a leading indicator on some issues.
