The same Chrysler Valiant station wagon that returned Mungo Man to Country was used to carry esteemed Indigenous singer-songwriter Archie Roach through the streets of Collingwood, Fitzroy and Melbourne’s CBD for a final time on Monday
The same Chrysler Valiant station wagon that returned Mungo Man to Country was used to carry esteemed Indigenous singer-songwriter Archie Roach through the streets of Collingwood, Fitzroy and Melbourne’s CBD for the final time on Monday.
Just as the discovery of Mungo Man’s remains after 42,000 years had been instrumental in increasing people’s understanding of Australia’s First Nations inhabitants, Roach, through heartfelt song, helped explain the pride and struggle of the continent’s Indigenous people. Mutthi Mutthi man Trevor Kelly joined a crowd at the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service in Fitzroy, where he remembered Roach welcoming him into his public housing residence in Reservoir as a teenager.
Donna Roach, a Gunditjmara woman and Roach’s niece, credited her uncle, a member of the stolen generations, with bringing her family on her mother’s side back together when she was a teenager.
