A long-awaited electric scooter trial will begin at four locations in Sydney’s west from Saturday as the NSW government takes a cautious approach to legalising their use in the state.

Lime’s Ellen Black and Mark Brodie with rental e-scooters at Lizard Log, one of four locations selected for the NSW government’s e-scooter trial beginning this Saturday. It is currently illegal to ride electric scooters in public places in NSW, and the state is the last in Australia to roll out a shared e-scooter scheme.

“We’ve taken our time to get this trial right,” he said. “Like any new technology, e-scooters present us with enormous opportunities and several challenges to address before we can permanently permit them on our streets.”He said the parklands were the “perfect location” to launch the trial before they are adopted in other council areas across the state.

Earlier this month the City of Sydney became one of several inner-city councils to rule out hosting e-scooters, with a spokesperson for Lord Mayor Clover Moore telling thethat the CBD was not the place to trial e-scooters because of “high levels of path congestion in the city centre, contested space and disconnections in the bike network”.
