Claims emerge that Netball Australia warned players they would not send a team to the World Cup unless they signed a new collective player agreement.
By the end of the week, Netball Australia had performed a stunning backflip, agreeing with the player suggestion to extend the current agreement for now and take the heat out of the crisis. That it did, adding to numerous other crises in the past year, raises serious questions of management and decision making at the sport's governing body. When a list of questions was put to the governing body, the response was that they would not be responding.
Harby-Williams said the emotional impact on the players was on top of an already 'volatile environment', putting at risk not just players future employment but the viability of the competition itself. Harby-Williams: "No. It was basically a decision had been made by Netball Australia, which was very clear on the email. I think it came out about three o'clock on the Monday. Don't quote me on that. But in that meeting, obviously, as I said, the players had an opportunity to ask questions. So Netball Australia was asked if the CPA could be rolled over and that was completely rejected."Harby-Williams: "Exactly right.
The Ticket: "So are you aware of anybody being told, when asking a question about what happens if the players don't sign, and the answer from Netball Australia was, 'we don't send a team to the World Cup'?Netball Australia's decision to email players directly, refusing to negotiate with the players association, is a reflection of poor governance according to Brendan Schwab, former head of World Players, the body representing professional athletes globally.
"Here we have a situation where effectively Netball Australia had threatened to lock the players out.
