The suspension of Senator Fatima Payman from the Labor Party caucus has divided the parliament as Prime Minister Anthony Albanes’s disciplinary action has been described simultaneously as “weak” and “appropriate”.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has come under fire from parliamentarians as his decision to indefinitely suspend Senator Fatima Payman for breaking Labor Party rules has been viewed as unusually lenient.

The Payman affair has marked the first time in decades that a Labor politician has crossed the floor. Ms Hume pointed out that Ms Payman had openly defied the Prime Minister on multiple occasions before receiving any repercussions. Shadow finance minister Jane Hume said Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had been"weak" on the Payman issue. Picture: Sky News Australia
