If you’ve ever seen fair weather clouds that resemble jellyfish, you are not alone. While “jellyfish cloud” is not an official cloud type, it is a perfect visual description of a phenomenon that can happen with altocumulus, cumulus and cirrostratus clouds during fair weather days when there’s enough moisture in the air to create clouds, but not enough for those clouds to grow large or produce rain.

So, what creates these amazing-looking clouds? In altocumulus clouds, the “tentacles” extending toward the ground , or precipitation that evaporates in drier air before reaching the ground. Other “jellyfish clouds” are created when changes in wind direction hit the ice crystals in cirrus or cirrostratus clouds, “stretching” the ice crystals and creating the tentacular jellyfish-like appearance.
