Barry Harris was an influencer before social media made that a gig.

The solo on the first record he slowed down to study was Bud Powell’s “I was lucky that way,” he told The Jersey Journal in 1989. He helped launch the Jazz Cultural Theater, a no-liquor, kid-friendly venue, and taught students at workshops in universities around New York. A typical workshop scene included clutches of students, many with tape recorders, hovered over the piano as Harris played. They learned about diminished chords -- and about the visionaries of the jazz canon: Powell, Charles Christopher Parker Jr., Thelonious Monk, John Birks Gillespie.

At the Hague workshop, retired engineer Carel Nieuwenhuis said Harris’ teaching style was natural – and mathematical.
