Weird Al reveals he almost regretted not letting Daniel Radcliffe sing in WEIRDTheAlYankovicStory, but had a good reason for doing so. 'The trouble always was that it’s a biopic thing for people to be lip-syncing, because it’s good.'

Though the star is already garnering rave reviews for his performance, Weird Al reveals he almost regrets not letting Daniel Radcliffe sing for Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. Radcliffe leads the cast of the comedic biopic loosely exploring the life of the eponymous comedic musician as he rises to stardom for his parodies of various pop tracks. Alongside Radcliffe, the cast for Weird: The Al Yankovic Story includes Evan Rachel Wood as Madonna, Rainn Wilson as Dr.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In a recent interview with Polygon, Weird Al opened up about the decision to have Daniel Radcliffe lip-sync for Weird: The Al Yankovic Story instead of actually sing. The co-writer/real-life subject reveals that he and director Eric Appel nearly went back on their decision to not let the actor sing after hearing his impressive vocals on set, though stuck with their decision for one key reason.

That was something we agonized over. Eric and I both felt a tinge of regret once we heard Daniel sing. I mean, we knew he was a great singer — he’s a Broadway star. But [on the set], he would sing along with the pre-recorded tracks, and Eric and I would look at each other and go, "Did we make a mistake here?" The trouble always was that it’s a biopic thing for people to be lip-syncing, because it’s good.

While he ultimately won the Oscar for his performance, Rami Malek lip-syncing as late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury for Bohemian Rhapsody became a major talking point for both critics and audiences upon the film's release, with some defending no one could match Mercury's talents, while others criticized the technical combination of Mercury, Malek and Marc Martel's for multiple sequences.

As both the star and Yankovic have noted, however, letting Radcliffe sing for Weird: The Al Yankovic Story would've ruined the movie's parody nature, taking away the lip-syncing joke of the film. The decision has ultimately proven to be in its favor, with Weird Al's faux biopic scoring largely positive reviews from critics and audiences alike for its subversive take on the genre, as well as highlighting Radcliffe's leading performance as the parody singer.
