As reported in SkyNews.com.au Christian preacher David Pellowe is being pursued by the Queensland Human Rights Commission after refusing to participate in the “Welcome to Country” ritual at his own conference.
Welcomes and Acknowledgements of Country have earmarks of a new state religion that breaches our fundamental freedoms of religion, conscience
The Church and State conferences, which Mr Pellowe founded and organises, are events where Christians gather to discuss the intersection of faith and politics. This brings us to the issues of the potential imposition of a state religion and freedom of religion and conscience. He wrote that in the ‘Church of the New Faith v. Commissioner for Pay-Roll Tax ’ case the High Court of Australia was asked to determine whether the tenets of the Church of Scientology constitute religion for the purposes of section 116 of the Constitution.
Therefore, at a Commonwealth level, any compulsion surrounding the Welcome to Country and Acknowledgement rituals could be seen as the imposition of a religious observance in violation of section 116 of the Constitution. Australia is a signatory to, and has ratified, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights .
Accordingly, by the imposition of Welcomes to Country on Australians at government meetings, school assemblies, and public events, as well as the “Acknowledgement of Country”, where non-Indigenous people are coerced to show respect to Aboriginal traditions, it is becoming increasingly clear that these ceremonies have become instruments of cultural and ideological control.
