Arsene Wenger sends message to ex-Arsenal man Emiliano Martinez for World Cup journey AFC
Arsene Wenger has expressed his pride at seeing former Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez shining at the World Cup in Qatar.
It was Wenger who brought the Argentine goalkeeper to north London back in 2010, Martinez signing an initial youth contract at the age of just 17.Martinez has thrived since leaving Arsenal and helped Argentina win the Copa America in the summer While making 38 appearances during his time with the Gunners, only 15 of those came in the Premier League as Martinez struggled to truly establish himself.
That led to a series of loan spells with the likes of Oxford United, Sheffield Wednesday, Rotherham, Wolves, Getafe and Reading where he showed his ability, before moving to Aston Villa in 2020.After leaving for Villa Park, it didn’t take long for Martinez to establish himself in Argentina’s national team, with the 30-year-old now their first choice keeper.
Having helped Argentina to Copa America glory in 2021 and playing every minute of their journey to Sunday’s World Cup final, it’s clear that Martinez is one of the top goalkeepers on the planet, something that Wenger believes is testament to his ability to work his way to the top.“We were aware of his huge qualities. He was determined and had a desire to learn and a big passion for the game.
