A retired cricket great has declared the Australian government owes tennis no.1 Novak Djokovic an apology, after AstraZeneca announced it would withdraw its vaccine globally.

Ex-cricketer Kevin Pietersen calls for Australian government to apologise to Novak Djokovic over COVID-19 vaccine stance after AstraZeneca jab withdrawn

In a since-deleted tweet posted to X on Wednesday, Pietersen said the government and critics of Djokovic should apologise after he was lashed with criticism for refusing to get vaccinated against COVID-19. Due to his unvaccinated status, Djokovic missed out on defending his crown in the 2022 Australian Open as well as taking part in the US Open the same year.

Tennis Australia and the Victoria government both confirmed the exemption on the basis that he had recently contracted COVID-19, which seemingly allowed him to forego vaccination requirements.
