The 24-hour homeless shelter at 742 Grayson St. will not be forced to relocate its 50 beds and 40 safe RV parking spaces until the end of 2022.
BERKELEY — The 24-hour Grayson homeless shelter will not be forced to relocate its 50 beds and 40 safe RV parking spaces — at least, not yet.
One blockade, however, is technically still up in the air for folks currently staying in RVs; the contract for the Safe Parking and Respite Program ends Friday at 11 p.m., meaning that the Berkeley Police Department will step in to provide on-site security — but not services — at least through the weekend.
Williams-Ridley said during Thursday’s meeting that the city staff is “hopeful” they will be able to lock in a private security firm by Monday, securing the parking lot throughout the newly extended lease until the end of December., a local nonprofit dedicated to helping people who are homeless, opened up the West Berkeley Horizon Transitional Village — often called the Grayson shelter, and located at 742 Grayson St.
Grayson also has attempted to provide an alternative environment for unhoused folks to live in the area, setting up rows of tents within the warehouse’s 45,000 feet of indoor space, simulating the way outdoor encampments are typically formed in place of standard cots in an effort to build more trust and comfort.
