Veteran West Coast defender Jeremy McGovern was sent to hospital with an internal injury during the Eagles’ AFL clash with Collingwood on Sunday. The 32-year-old flew for a mark in the second term and landed on his arm, which dug into his ribs on impact with the ground. He immediately left the ground in clear pain but put on a brave face to get back out there.
The Magpies also secured a much-needed percentage boost, lifting nine points to push above 100 for the first time this season. But the win came at a cost, with Howe and Harvey Harrison hurt during the first quarter. Former St Kilda midfielder Jack Bytel, who was substituted in for Howe on his Magpies debut, also failed to finish the match because of concussion after a collision with Jack Darling. A third straight defeat leaves the Eagles with a 2-7 record and third from bottom on the ladder.
