‘Compared to What?,’ presented by Masquers Playhouse, centers on the challenging life for Black train porters in Oakland in the 1920s.
West Oakland has come to Point Richmond this month, at least on stage. Masquers Playhouse is performing Judith Offer’s play “Compared to What?,” about African American train porters staying at a white Irish woman’s boarding house in West Oakland in 1926.
Mira Theatre Guild premiered the play in Vallejo in 2011 with Offer directing, and she produced an Oakland run in 2013. The Masquers production has had to overcome a few challenges. It took a long time to cast several of the roles because there wasn’t much overlap between the community theater’s casting pool and the roles that needed to be cast.
