West Side Museo to share stories of San Antonians not told in other museums
Blanca Rosa Rodgriguez, 88 and a graduate of Lainer High School, sings with a mariachi band at the dedication of the Mueso del Westside. The museo is located at the former Ruben?•s Ice house, now the Rinconcito de Esperanza.Center director Graciela Sánchez said the project, funded with $1.5 million in West Side TIRZ dollars and grant funds, will have photos, music, documents and hands-on displays that capture the color, beauty and diversity of the West Side.
“We want to tell that more complex story and how everybody exchanged,” Sánchez said. “Because there were no deed restrictions, everybody could live here. So you did have that melding of different cultures.” Historian and author Antonia Castañeda, scholarly advisory board member of the museo, said the project “powerfully adds to the sustained histories of the urban community-based, working-class arts, cultural and social institutions the Esperanza has built across 35 years of existence.” She said there are no museums in San Antonio that “feature, honor, acknowledge and value urban working-class Mexican American history and culture — until now.
