A Western Sydney local council has been slammed for attempting to implement an Indigenous “treaty by stealth”.
A local council in Western Sydney has been slammed for ploughing ahead with an Indigenous "treaty by stealth", with the agreement giving land councils"horrendous" powers over planning decisions.
“They tried to sneak it in under the cover of darkness at the 17th of April meeting, buried in the ATSIC committee minutes … Lucky I picked it up – with my colleagues, Councillors Garrard and Hughes – and we objected and asked for legal advice.” The draft of the partnership agreement explicitly acknowledged “Aboriginal custodianship of land and sovereignty… over land that has never been ceded” and commits the parties to seeing each other as “co-managers”.
Access to land and waters in Cumberland City Council and Aboriginal language street signage are also mentioned as possible matters for agreement. "Imagine all the red tape that's going to be created when you have to consult on every land purchase or every negotiation or deal that council wants to implement. It's just not on."
